Better Health and Hospitals

New Bundaberg Hospital

Delivering the new Bundaberg Hospital is a commitment that I made to the people of Bundaberg.

The $1.2 billion new Bundaberg Hospital is a huge project for our region which will reduce the need for patients to travel outside the region for more specialist care.

Wide Bay residents can look forward to 121 extra beds as part of the new hospital – an increase in bed capacity of nearly 50 per cent.

The new hospital will undoubtedly deliver enormous health benefits through improved and expanded services including an expanded emergency department, and enhanced medical, surgical and mental health services.

Early works have already begun with work starting to construct the new sealed access road to Johanna Boulevard.

Construction of the new hospital will also provide a huge boost for our local economy, creating approximately 2,887 jobs during construction.

This is the biggest health investment the Wide Bay region has ever seen and I’m proud to deliver it through the Palaszczuk Government.

Bundaberg Urgent Care Clinic

Tenders are currently out for the Bundaberg Urgent Care Clinic which will be funded through both State and Federal Government.

In partnership with an existing GP clinic, the Urgent Care Clinic will provide more access to health services particularly in the after hours periods and will reduce current demand on the public health emergency department at the Bundaberg base Hospital.

New Mental Health Crisis Support Space

Works are underway on Bundaberg’s new Lighthouse Crisis Support Space at Bundaberg Hospital.

The centre will enable mental health consumers to access mental health support directly from peer workers and mental health clinicians rather than staying in the emergency department.

Preparations for the service’s establishment follow the successful launch of The Oasis crisis support space at Hervey Bay Hospital, which opened last year as part of a statewide trial of the new model of care.

Located across from the ambulance bay from the Bundaberg Hospital emergency department, the Lighthouse construction site has been fenced off and is being prepared to open in the second half of 2023.

This new centre will deliver not only healthier outcomes for people in mental health distress presenting to the hospital, but also safer outcomes for themselves.

By providing a specialised environment that is designed to accommodate both peer and clinical support, The Lighthouse will offer a much more appropriate place of care for people presenting in distress or crisis.

I’m proud to be part of the Palaszczuk Government which has a proud track record of delivering high-quality health services for Bundaberg.

GP survey

I recently launched a survey of local Bundaberg GPs to highlight local issues that practices are currently facing and ways that the Federal Government can support GPs to provide healthcare services to the Bundaberg community. Stay in touch for more updates.
